Yoga Mayu primarily offers classes in a Vinyasa style.
Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of classical yoga styles. The word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” In other words, the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance.
A cat/cow stretch is an example of a very simple Vinyasa, because the spine is arched on an inhale and rounded on an exhale. A Surya Namaskara (sun salutations) sequence is an example of a more complex Vinyasa. Each movement in the series is done on an inhalation or an exhalation.
What To Expect From a Vinyasa Class
In this practice, students flow from one posture to another, synchronizing breath and movement. Often the class begins with sun salutations, standing poses, and balancing postures, then moves to seated forward-folds, twists, backbends and inversions. Exertion may range from mild to vigorous and emphasis may vary depending on each teacher. (For a perfect fit, please read the teacher’s biography).
Is Vinyasa Yoga for You?
Vinyasa’s strength is in its diversity. There is no single philosophy, rulebook, or sequence that teachers must follow, so there is a lot of room for individual personalities and quirks to come through. This makes it essential that you find a teacher you enjoy and can relate to. If your first Vinyasa class doesn’t rock your world, keep trying different teachers. If you enjoy having things a little loose and unpredictable and like to move, Vinyasa is probably right for you.
In addition to our more vigorous classes we also offer
Mellow and Restorative classes.
Mellow Flow
A slow moving powerful class dedicated to nourishing the heart, spirit and body through meditative movement linked with breath. The simple aim of the class is to create the space to open the heart and lengthen the spine using twists, standing poses, core work, creative and restorative forward folds and backbends and a nice long savasana. This class is open to all levels.
Restorative Flow
Melt away the week. Restorative flow is slow deep and powerful practice focused on unlocking chronic tension utilizing a combination of Yoga asana, somatic movement and restorative shapes. We will flow through poses as well as hold them, build strength, stamina and flexibility in a nurturing and healing way connecting mindfully to the breath, body and spirit. Yogis of all ages, sizes and levels are welcome to attend.
